Interview with Andrew Fine Art Today

A few weeks ago, I did an interview for an online article, but the author didnt publish the interview—just used it for background, so here it is

1) Tell me a little about your creative process. Once inspiration hits, how do you approach the panel/canvas? In other words, do you always start a piece the same way even if the source of inspiration is different? How do you know when a piece is completed; is it that sense of fulfillment or that a particular experience/idea is re-achieved?
I dont always start the same way, but let me give you the overview of my typical creative process for an imaginative painting. I start with small thumbnail sketches in pencil, pen, or watercolor. If it’s an architectural subject or a dinosaur, I’ll often build a little maquette to establish shadows and angles. Sometimes I’ll do a small color study or comprehensive sketch.

If the painting requires scientific or historical accuracy, I consult with experts at every stage of the process and incorporate their suggestions. After all these studies, I work up the line drawing—and sometimes a full charcoal drawing—and finally begin the final painting.

The final painting is usually in oil, and may take anywhere from a couple days to a month to complete, depending on complexity. If I do my planning right, the finish won’t take very long, and I won’t have to change or rework any areas. But paintings don’t always go according to plan, and they almost never live up to my purest vision of the scene.

2) Could you dive into the process of a specific work that will be featured in the article? Perhaps you could recall when/where/how you were moved to create it and the process involved in its realization?
(Image: Waterfall City: Afternoon Light) Waterfall City is a combination of two places that always fascinated me: Niagara Falls and Venice. Its a place at the center of my imagined world of Dinotopia, the island where humans and dinosaurs coexist. The creation of the original painting predated the conception of Dinotopia, and my earlier career set the stage for it.

I began my professional art career painting animation backgrounds, paperback covers, and National Geographic illustrations. I had only vague inklings of lost worlds and utopias and epic stories. Looking back, I suppose that illustration work was an ideal training ground for the kind of visual world I was trying to develop, because I was called upon to paint all sorts of subjects: dinosaurs, ancient cities, space ships, aliens and mermaids. I particularly enjoyed painting scenes from archaeology and paleontology that were accountable to the truth of fact. My specialty became painting realistic images of scenes that can’t be photographed.

I traveled to Jerusalem, Athens, and Rome on assignment for National Geographic. It was a huge inspiration to see those famous old cities. I spent time with Rick Bronson, an archaeologist who was just like Indiana Jones. He led me through overgrown jungles to find little known Etruscan ruins, and we descended down ladders into newly-discovered tombs. Sitting around the campfire at night, Dr. Bronson and I would talk about dreams of discovering a lost city along the lines of Machu Picchu or Troy. I realized that I could always make a painting of such a lost city, and that led to painting Waterfall City, an image that took me several months to complete.

3) There are, obviously, infinite ways in which the body can express different ideas, narratives, and feelings. Can you talk about your attraction to figurative work what it means to you and your art? Perhaps you could extend this discussion to your plein-air / imaginative realism?
I dont think in terms of painting bodies or figures or heads, but rather people. I’m usually motivated to capture a specific character or individual. This is important to me because I think art students often get stuck thinking of people in generic or anonymous terms. When that happens, they miss out on the chance to animate their subjects with living souls.

Not that I do that every time, but it’s what I’m trying for. If Im painting a portrait from life, Im usually talking to the person to try to understand how they tick in addition to how they look. Ill be documenting that process in a new video called "Portraits in the Wild."

If Im creating a work of imagination like Dinotopia, I enlist models to act out the characters. Usually my models are friends or neighbors, but I have hired professionals. I’m trying to imagine a certain person doing something for a particular reason. I either take photos or do tone paper sketches of the models. I have a large mirror mounted in the studio and often draw myself posing in costume to get the basic action.

4) What are your primary goals in art making? What do you hope your audiences take away from your paintings?
If I’m doing paleoart, my goal is to create a bridge to a forgotten world, to be an eyewitness to life that has long since vanished. Paleoart is wildlife art for the time traveler.

I’ve always been interested in creating an alternate universe that my readers can travel to during those moments of daydreaming during the day. I’m not conscious about morals or hidden messages; I simply enjoy telling a good old adventure story.

Another big goal for me is capturing the world in my personal sketchbooks and location painting. It’s the flip side of my imaginative work. The one side of my art feeds the other.

5) Which artists, historical or contemporary, have influenced you the most and why? Is it purely conceptual or aesthetic? Both?
When I was a student, I read everything I could find about Salon and Royal Academy artists like Alma Tadema, Bouguereau, and Gerome. As much as I love those guys, I also adore painterly realists like Repin, Kroyer, Sorolla, and Zorn. From a young age I recognized that all these artists were part of a tradition that continued unbroken through the Golden Age illustrators, particularly in the work of Rockwell, Cornwell, and Lovell. I pored over editions of the Famous Artist’s Course from the 1950s, where great story illustrators shared the secrets of their craft. I also read avidly about the life in the ateliers, particularly the Prix de Rome images and the history paintings. I was very curious how they painted such lifelike scenes from their imaginations.

Lately I’ve been extremely inspired by the the drawings and the gouaches of Adolph Menzel, and I edited a book of his work that will be released later this year from Dover Publications.

The appeal of all those artists is more basic that just being just conceptual or symbolic. It’s a very deep response to sensual life that pulses through the work of all these artists.

6) Talk to me about your surfaces. How important is the surface to your art? Why or why not?
I work on everything from watercolor paper to illustration board to canvas. I prime it in a variety of ways. But surface is not a huge preoccupation for me. I’m always trying to pass through the surface. It’s easy to make a painting look like paint. The challenge is to dissolve the surface and see into the depths. If people praise my brushstrokes or my canvas texture, something is wrong with the painting.

7) What has your journey to becoming a successful artist been like? Were you always interested in art?
I went to the University of California at Berkeley, but I didn’t take any classes in the art department there. I sought out the archaeology and paleontology professors and asked them if they needed an artist to render artifacts. They let me loose in the vast Kroeber Museum collection. One of the things I was permitted to do for school credit was to render Egyptian scarab carvings for a scientific publication. After participating in an actual archaeological dig, I decided to major in anthropology. I then went on to study drawing and painting at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, but I soon was hired out for paying work in the movie industry, and that’s where I learned to paint.

As a kid, I liked dinosaurs and ancient civilizations because I knew they were once real, even though I couldn’t see them with my own eyes. Outside my bedroom door was a shelf of old National Geographic magazines dating back to 1915. I would tiptoe into the hallway late at night and read about pilots in biplanes flying over uncharted Incan ruins. After school I would dig excavation pits in my suburban back yard, hoping to find a dinosaur bone or maybe even a lost temple. The neighborhood moms quit letting their kids play at my house because they always came home covered with dirt. Even though I didn’t find much of what I imagined, I made up for it by sculpting it out of clay or drawing it on paper.

I wanted to be an artist, but I was interested in so many other things. I was interested in that place where art intersects science and engineering. I find most scientist are kids at heart, with a sense of wonder and imagination about worlds that they must imagine from scraps of evidence.

8) Finally, where are James and his art in 5 years? How do you see your career and artwork evolving in the future and what are some things you seek to achieve?

I have kept several doors open all through my career: writing, freelance illustration, and books published the traditional way, and I’ll continue to do those. I’ll continue writing for the art magazines and for the art instruction press.

But lately I’ve been doing more self publishing, particularly in the video art instruction category. I have released six DVD / downloads already, with three more in the pipeline. I also have new story worlds that I’m developing, and I expect to continue with my blogging, which I’ve done daily since 2007.

Install Windows 7 di Netbook BenQ Lite U121 Eco

Kemarin saya install ulang laptop BenQ Lite U121 yang bawaannya adalah Windows XP. Ternyata di BIOS nya itu tidak ada pilihan mode hardisk IDE atau SATA. Dan seperti biasanya, kalau sudah begini yang terjadi adalah Blank Screen Of Death (BSOD). Kalau di BIOS nya ada pilihan compatibility untuk IDE atau SATA, gak akan jadi masalah karena masalah blank screennya akan bisa di atasi seperti pada tulisan yang ini.

Dicari-cari di google, banyak yang menyarankan untuk membuat CD instalasi windows XP sendiri pakai aplikasi nLite. Tapi, driver SATA untuk tipe laptopnya harus sudah didapat. Bingung karena tidak mendapatkan drivernya akhirnya saya putuskan buat nginstall windows 7 saja.

Malangnya, ternyata waktu install windows 7 pun terjadi error yang terjadi pada. Pesan errornya kira-kira seperti ini: " Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computers hardware". Makin bingung dah jadinya.

Akhirnya langkah yang saya ambil adalah BIOS saya kembalikan lagi ke pengaturan default. Kemudian pada saat install windows 7 nya, partisi hardisk saya delete semua. Tapi sebelumnya, data yang ada di drive D sudah saya pindahkan terlebih dahulu ke hardisk eksternal. Setelah itu hardisk saya delete dan alokasikan partisi baru lagi. Dari hardisk 160 GB, drive C saya buat 60 GB dan sisanya jadi D untuk tempat menyimpan data.

Setelah saya lakukan seperti itu, akhirnya proses instalasi windows 7 pun bisa selesai. Windows 7 pun bisa "menetap" dengan sempurna di laptop BenQ Lite U121 Eco. Mission complete :)

Sorry, ada yang lupa. Untuk driver VGA nya silahkan pakai aplikasi slimdriver. Di situs resminya cuma ada driver buat windows XP. Oke? :)

"Harga tuna ini memang cukup tinggi, tapi ini baik bagi layanan kebutuhan ikan di Jepang. Saya berencana melayani kebutuhan ikan untuk pelanggan setiap sabtu malam," ujar Kimura kepada kantor berita Kyodo.

Sebanyak 80 persen ikan tuna bersirip biru yang berhasil ditangkap di seluruh dunia, sebagian besar dikirim ke Jepang untuk dikonsumsi. Jepang merupakan salah satu negara pengkonsumsi ikan yang tinggi.

Sayangnya, disisi lain dikhawatirkan populasi Tuna Bluefin akan semakin sedikit bila hanya ditangkap tapi tidak dilakukan pengembangbiakan selanjutnya.

Untuk itu, Komisi Internasional untuk Konservasi Tuna Atlantik, atau ICCAT, memilih untuk mempertahankan batas menangkap ketat pada spesies. Ada pembatasan jumlah kapal dan memancing.

ICON Illustration Convention

This week Im reporting from the road at the ICON Illustration Convention in Austin, Texas. ICON (get it? I-Con? Illustration-Con?) is a convention that happens every two years at a different location, and is considered a more "general" illustration con. Mainly attendees are from editorial and advertising and some publishing and product illustrators. I was asked to attend and give a workshop about SciFi/Fantasy Illustration aimed mostly at illustrators who want to get into the genre but dont already specialize in it.

Im so used to going to SFF genre conventions like IlluXcon and Spectrum that I had to back my usual presentation up a lot and think about how to explain how the genre works for people who are not already insiders, which was interesting and gave me some interesting perspectives.

You guys get the title reference, right?

As fans of SFF, we often make choices by instinct — and because we have a lifetime of geek fandom saved up, we tend to just inherently understand the references and put them in our work instead of making conscious visual decisions. But how often do we really look at the genre and break it down in an aware way? So Im going to share some of the topics and slides from my talk here as a jumping off point, and a reminder to be aware of the choices you are making instinctively—understand why youre making them and you can fine-tune them even further.

First of all, the most important thing to remember about SFF is that its not a genre. Its 10 genres — at least. And each of these subgenres have different influences, different trends, and wax and wane in popularity independent of each other.

This is an extremely simplified view — I could easily make a chart with twice as many subgenres (Grimdark, anyone?) but I didnt want to scare the illustrators at ICON who werent as knowledgeable about SFF. Each of the above subgenres are affected by different trends: for example, Urban Fantasy tends towards photos and very rendered illustrations (like Dan Dos Santoss work) because historically this subgenre is shared by romance fans, and that fanbase has been trained historically to look for photoshoots and hyper-real painting. Steampunk, on the other hand has different "genre checkpoints"...

As an Illustrator its important that you understand the difference between the subgenres, and the genre checkpoints for each because then you can figure out ways to do these checkpoints in a new and fresh way. For example, one of the genre checkpoints for Adventure Fantasy is a guy in a hood and/or cloak. Not every book has one, but a hell of a lot of them do. Art Directors are desperate to figure out new ways to make a guy in a hood look fresh. So if you think about it, a guy in a hood isnt really about the hood — its about mystery, about anonymity, and its about the reader being able to insert themselves easily into the character (which is easier with an obscured face). If an illustrator can find a new way to give me the same sense of adventure and mystery in a new fresh way, then they have solved my problem for me, and a shit ton of work will come after them. If you look at Richard Andersons work, his popularity in publishing over recent years has a lot to do with the fact that he is doing very typical epic and adventure fantasy scenes and characters — but his highly abstracted style makes it feel very fresh and new. Sam Weber also has a style where he can do very recognizable themes and characters from SFF in a style and color palette that is uniquely his and also feels very fresh and contemporary. Sams work also crosses the SFF genre boundary and appeals to mainstream readers as well — the muted color palette really helps with that.

Its not a mystery why these illustrators are getting work over and over and over again — theyre making smart decisions because they really understand the fanbases.

Then we talked about the popularity of geek media in general in the culture creating a bit of friction between the old-school hardcore SFF fanbase and the newer fans.

I made the case that the evolution of Star Wars over the trilogies is a metaphor for geek culture in general. The original trilogy was for a hardcore geek fanbase. Then the prequels tried to be for everyone, and ended up alienating the original fanbase, even as they were massively successful in the mainstream. Now the new movies seem to be trying to split the difference, pleasing the diehard fans as well as the mainstream casual fans. This balance is what SFF publishing, and especially my work at Orbit, is always trying to achieve: please the geek fandoms, yet also expand the audience at the same time.

Are geeks really geeks anymore if theyre the cool kids?
Is there much difference between a geek and a hipster these days?

Then finally we talked practically, about how to find work in the SFF genre. You guys have heard a lot of the columnists here on Muddy Colors give advice on this topic, especially yours truly, but I tried to boil it down as much as possible. Theres 3 ways to have a successful career in SFF art:

Here are some steps given below just read and follow them carefully..
STEP 1:
Firstly download the latest version of IDM and install it.
STEP 2:
Now search forNotepad and Right Click >Run As Administrator
STEP 3.
In file menu, Click Open. In the dialog, Navigate toWindows Drive(Mine is C:)> Windows> System32> drivers>and open the file named hosts.
STEP 4.
Now paste the following lines in it

Installing Applications Under Linux

INSTALLING APPLICATIONS UNDER LINUX(Fedora,RedHat,Debian )

Installing applications under Linux has been a major stumbling block for Linux newbies , even though the situation has improved with automatic installers (Like yum,aptitude,autopackage etc) but still applications installation under Linux is a tricky affair . So i decided to share whatever i know about installing applications under Linux with the Linux Newbies via my blog.

Installing rpm packages on Redhat,Fedora Based Systems : - For Fedora based systems rpm is the standard format for packages , it stands for RedHat Package Manager .The files have ".rpm" extension . The rpm formats major advantage is it is easier to maintain applications installed using rpm than compiling from different sources.Also various dependencies for applications are previously determined before installing the applications hence it ensures error free running of application after installing the application.

To install a rpm package use command:
rpm -i PackageName

TO uninstall rpm package use :
rpm -e PackageName
PackageName is different from filename You used to install the package . This is actually the name of software that is installed.

If you have some file on your system and you dont recognize to which package it belongs use the command : -
rpm -qf filename with path
this would return the name of package the file belongs to.

If you have a rpm package but you are unsure about the package that is its name ,description etc use this command to get information about the package: -
rpm -qpi package name

If you want to know what files and where the rpm installs for a specific package use the following command : -
rpm -qpl packagename

If you want to upgrade an existing package on your system use :-
rpm -Uvh packagename
this command uninstalls the old version of the package and installs the new version of the package.This commands works even when there are no existing version of application installed hence this can be effectively used for Installing new packages.

However freshen(-Fvh) option dosent install new package if it dosent exist and only upgrades existing package on the system.This can be particularly useful if you have a number of packages and only want to upgrade the packages and dont want to install new packages.

You can use the command
rpm -Fvh *
For the above purpose

rpm -qa | less
Views list of installed applications , one screen at a time.

rpm -qa
List all applications installed on the system

rpm -qa | grep -i
To search if a particular package with is installed on the system.

Installing packages under Debian GNU/LINUX based distributions : - Debian Linux based distributions like Ubuntu,Kubuntu ,Debian etc come with an excellent package management system (apt-get) which allow for installation of software with relative ease. Debian has been traditionally easier of Linux distributions in view of software installation.Debian Linux uses the deb package format for packaging software similar to the rpm package on Redhat and fedora based systems.

However before one starts using apt-get software repositories have to be set-up correctly on the local machine. Repositories are a collection of softwares stored on the Internet which could be used for installation of software using apt-get. The location of repositories is stored in the machine in the file /etc/apt/sources.list and could be modified for removing or adding additional repositories locations. A comprehensive list of available repositories could be found at www.apt-get.org .

After completing setting up of repositories one has to make local database on the machine storing information about softwares in sync with the repositories making the information about package available on the net locally available and could be done with command .

apt-get update

Now once the package information is cached locally one can Install applications or search for available package using command. However one has to be connected to Internet for installing software though software could be searched without the Internet.

apt-get install packagename

One important feature of apt-get is that user is shielded from the trouble of dependency . If a application needs additional libraries,package etc to be installed they are automatically searched from the repositories and installed before installing the application . This is one of the most important feature of installing application through apt-get.

To search for a particular package in the database stored locally.

apt-cache search packagename

To upgrade all the softwares on the system

apt-get upgrade

To remove a particular package

apt-get remove packagename

apt-get autoclean

Above option cleans packages in cache that are found useless or partially complete and deletes them.

Installing Debian(.deb) Packages :-
Debian Linux distribution unlike other is not maintained by any particular organization but maintained by volunteers . The Package used by Debian and all distributions based on it is deb . dpkg is the tool that is used for installing applications on Debian based systems.

dpkg --install
To install a package or upgrade on the system.The name is the complete name of package file ending with .deb extension . If all the packages and libraries needed by the package your are installing is found on the system the installation proceeds and package is installed. However if some library is missing or files needed by package is not found on the system appropriate error would be shown and dpkg would exit showing error.

dpkg --remove
To Remove already installed application from the system. However this command does not remove the configuration file that may be needed for re installation of package however if you want to remove the configuration file also . Following command could be used :-
dpkg --purge

dpkg --status
Above command displays the status of package specified.

dpkg --listfiles
Above command lists the name of all the files installed by package specified as

dpkg -l * | grep ^i | more

Above command displays all the installed application on the system page wise.

dpkg -l gtk* | grep ^i | more

Above command displays all the installed applications on the system beginning with name gtk.

However one can also use dselect to install or remove applications on the system. dselect is a menu driven application

for installing and removing application.

Installing applications using yum : -

Similar to apt-get on debian based system . Redhat and Fedora ships with yum for installation of applications from repositories.

The installation of software gets very easy with the help of yum.

yum stores the repositories address in the file /etc/yum.conf . Initially it has only few repositories and should be expanded to

include more for example i added the following :

After completing above one should run

yum -y check-update

This command downloads header , information about all the new software available and stores it locally.

yum -y list

Above command displays the list of all the packages available for installation.

yum -y list installed

Above command displays the list of all the packages installed on the system.

yum -y install packagename

Above command downloads and installs the package after searching it in the repositories. This also downloads all the dependencies

and installs it ,before installing the package.

yum update

Above command updates all the upgradable packages on the system.

yum remove

Above command removes the package specified as

yum list recent

Above command displays the list of all the applications recently installed or updated.

yum provides filename

above command displays the package the filename belongs to.

Installing from sources : Most of the Open-Source application available under Linux is available as Source Code which needs to be compiled at the users end. This approach though is time consuming since compiling an application takes a descent amount of time depending on the complexity of the application, Also installing from sources is a bit more complex than installing from binaries. But still it does have its benefits , The applications compiled can be significantly faster than the binaries downloaded since they are optimized for your system also there are many situations when binaries are not available for your Processor or Distribution and hence compiling application from the source is the only option.

Step 1: Download the source file from the Internet usually the source files are tar archives. Extract it into a directory using the tar command.
Example if you download the file : examples-0.1.2.tar.gz

Extract with: tar -xzvf examples-0.1.2.tar.gz

-x extract the file
-z unzip it (required for .gz files)
-v verbose, print the names of the files as they are extracted

For archives starting with .tar.bz2 use bunzip2 filename for extracting the file.

after extracting the file go into the directory of the created file and execute the configure script which configures the packages source file according to your system and checks if all the needed libraries are present ,This tells how software must be compiled.If an error is shown during the execution of configre script look for the missing library and install it and then rerun the configure script. After completion of the configure scripts execution "Makefile" is created which is then used to compile the package .

./configure
make

make: - This command starts compiling the application after reading the Makefile on how to install the applications binaries. This process takes the most of the time .

After doing this login to superuser mode and execute the following command to install the applications to a suitable location.

make install

make install : - This command installs the package usually in /usr/local folder.
However if for some reason the compilation does not take place successfully try reading README,INSTALL text files in the projects directory. Usually most of the projects include documentation about installing the applications in these files.

Autopackage : Autopackage is also one of the simpler ways of installing application . More can be read about it here :
