IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE


In Pakistan, English is being taught as a second compulsory language. It is a modern foreignlanguage and occupies an international position hardly enjoyed by any other language moreover, the political supremacy of the English people led to the rapid spread of the English language. The raising power of the united states of America and its fast spreading influence played a vital role in guiding the growth of English and helping it assume an eminent position all over the world.

   In Pakistan, there are two school of thoughts one is in favour of English and the other is against English. Both of the classes are extremists. They involve into it their sentiments instead of giving the facts. Apart from sentimental consideration either in favour or against English, the fact remains that the study of English as a second language in indispensable for any Pakistani young man who wants to reap the full benefits of modern education and technology.

    Its privileged position as a second compulsory language is recommended for the following reasons.

  1. An international language of communication:
English occupies an international position and is the only means of our contact with the rest of the world. No country can remain isolated and cut off from the education scientific and cultural movements that are going on in the world. The world has shrunk in size and we have to choose an international language for the world communication and knowledge. The latest statistics show that more than half the world speaks English. therefore, for the purpose of having contact with the rest of the world we have to study English.

  1. Language of the higher professions:
English is the language of the higher professions. It is an indispensable attainment for all professions open to educated men. For professions like engineering, medicine, agriculture, animal, husbandry and all branches of higher scientific work, a knowledge of the English is necessary. It is an essential for the students going abroad for higher education to get admission into any foreign university. Those students who cannot express themselves in this language have lesser chances to get education abroad and good employment in Pakistan.

  1. A language of world knowledge:
      today, the scientific discoveries are being carried out and researches being made in the whole world very rapidly. But the scientists and the scholars present their research in this very language. There is thus a constant flow of fresh knowledge in this language. It is an over expanding store house of knowledge.

  1. A language of standard terminology:
Standard terminology is science and technology is available only in this language. Attempts have been made to translate some of the terms into Urdu. But they proved themselves harmful to the progress of thought and to the improvement of knowledge. Moreover, their translation into the national language causes a confusion into the minds of the young researches. It would be better to quote here the report of the commission on national education.
                  
       “Any attempt at translating scientific and technical terms, nations and symbols, will not be futile but harmful to the progress of taught and to the advancement of knowledge. In translation new words have to be coined which are not in actual use in the language and do not have the advantage of usage in the scientific world. The best course will be, to adopt scientific and technical terms and nations as they are being used in English. The language of science is universal and does not belong to any particular people. In the modern world scientific advance is a co-operative effort in which all the nations participate. We cannot hope to take an effective part in this field of co-operation unless we learn and use the language of science, :that is, the terms, the symbols and nations that are in general use in the scientific world.”

  1. A rich store of literature.:
English is a rich store if literature end is a means for understanding the western civilization and culture. The learning of foreign language is one of the most important means of promoting international understanding and co-operation. English literature can hardly be surpassed by any other language in the world . English literature is read and appreciated in almost every university in the world.

The English language has rendered another valuable service by translating the literature of the other language for he convenience of the English reading people.

  1. English the language of world diplomats:
English is an international language. Diplomats of any country con only make an effective contribution at any international forum when they have a sound command of English language.
