Its not about the gear stupid

Its not about the gear stupid

Bumped into a photographer friend this morning in town on the way to work, and after we parted (about 15 minutes later), I realised that all we had talked about was gear. 5DMk3 this, 70-200mm that, Nikon blah blah, Canon hoo haa.

What is it with photographers and their gear? Do dentists who bump into each other talk about the latest drill? Do mechanics talk about the latest spanner? Maybe they do? (Any dentists or mechanics out there who can verify this?).

Im obviously as guilty as the next bloke - although I do fluctuate between two complete polar opposites in the gear vs talent debate. Its been very fashionable for a while now to put the gearhead aspect of photography down. You have to have been living under a rock for the last few years not to have heard the best camera is the one you have with you mantra bought up time and time again by the insanely gifted. To which I say - CRAP! Oh, and by the way, what do these what you have with you exponents have with them most of the time? Canon 1DXs or the latest iPhone 4G of course. Quite frankly Im thoroughly sick of the whole I just take my iphone with me on holiday and get beatiful 8x10" prints brigade. Ive got an old iPhone 3 and the camera on that thing is just crap (oh no, I said crap again!)

Go up to a sport photographer at the Olympics and tell him his gear doesnt matter. Go on, I dare you. Would he swap that new 12fps Canon 1Dx for my iPhone 3? I think not. And I wouldnt expect him to either. I find the whole gear doesnt matter thing so condescending it makes me want to spit (in case you hadnt already noticed).

BUT - (and yes, theres always a but), nor do I hold to the whole got to have the latest and the greatest gear mentality either. Do you use a Canon? Do you use a Nikon? Or, heaven forfend - do you use a Sony? To which I say - who gives a flying...... what brand of camera you own? Use a Pentax for all I care - although really, why would you!  :-)  (joking people, joking).

Has it got 6MP, 8MP, 12MP or 36MP!? Who cares? Ive owned three of the four megapixel ratings mentioned (guess which is the odd one out), and no client has EVER asked me how many megapixels my camera has. Granted, Im not shooting for billboards - or cropping heavily - but if you are, or do, then it becomes a real question of need - not merely of keeping up with everybody else. And who really cares whether those 12MP came from a Canon or Nikon? I mean, really....

Most of us are shooting for the web, or computer screen viewing now anyway, arent we?

Heres a test for you...

Can anyone tell me, just by looking at the image above, whether it was shot on a Canon or a Nikon? Is it from a 6MP, 8MP, 12MP or 24MP camera? Was I wearing sneakers or bare feet when I took the shot? Are any of these questions relevant?

Of course not. All that really matters is whether Ive taken a good photo or not. And this is where the technical capabilities of the gear come into play. Am I happy with lens choice, depth of field, is it sharp where I want it to be?

How about another image...

What about this shot? Is it digital? Is it film? Was it cropped to a square image, or shot on medium format? Was it converted to black and white from colour? Again - is it Canon, Nikon or Sony?

More important, for my growth as a photographer, Id much rather ask - is it a good composition? Does the image have something to say? Is it graphically pleasing? Have I taken it at the right angle so that it expresses what I wanted to say? Was the camera working with me, or against me (the gear matters part of the picture equation).

And finally...

All the same questions as the previous image apply - even though the two photos couldnt have been captured more differently.

When we stop, and concentrate on the image, then no, the gear doesnt matter. BUT - of course it does matter, by allowing you to take the kind of image that you have in your minds eye in the first place. With technology moving at such an alarming rate - and no sign of this slowing up any time soon - the line between want, and need, can easily become blurred.

In the end, though, all I really want to be is a better photographer. Do I really need the latest Nikon D4? Of course not. Will simply owning it make me a better photographer? Ah - no.

And for the record - the first image was taken on an Olympus Pen EP3 - as was the second image. The last image is... film. Taken on a Bronica S2 medium format 6x6 camera. And it also happens to be my favourite image of the bunch.

Important Skills Students Need for the Future that we need to help them learn

Important Skills Students Need for the Future that we need to help them learn

Back in January of 2012, I published a post entitled "10 Important Skills Students need for the Future" in which I described what I, and other research, felt were the 10 most important skills for students to learn.

The list:
  • Sense-making. The ability to determine the deeper meaning or significance of what is being expressed
  • Social intelligence. The ability to connect to others in a deep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactions and desired interactions
  • Novel and adaptive thinking. Proficiency at thinking and coming up with solutions and responses beyond that which is rote or rule-based
  • Cross-cultural competency. The ability to operate in different cultural settings
  • Computational thinking. The ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data-based reasoning
  • New-media literacy. The ability to critically assess and develop content that uses new media forms and to leverage these media for persuasive communication
  • Transdisciplinarity. Literacy in and ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines
  • Design mind-set. Ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired outcomes
  • Cognitive load management. The ability to discriminate and filter information for importance and to understand how to maximize cognitive functioning using a variety of tools and techniques
  • Virtual collaboration. The ability to work productively, drive engagement and demonstrate presence as a member of a virtual team
I also posted this list this past January that came from employers:
  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Positive Thinking
  • Creative/Innovative
  • Multi-tasking
  • Initiative
  • Cultural Sensitivity
  • Accepting Responsibility
  • Team Working
  • Empathy
  • Communication
  • Time Management
  • Professional Manners
Edudemic has released a list of the 8 Skills Students Must Have for the Future. The article also has some tips for teaching these skills.
  • Leadership
  • Digital Literacy
  • Communication
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Entrepeurship
  • Global Citizenship
  • Problem Solving
  • Team Working
Most of these lists cross over with each other, but are all important. Project Based Learning can help students develop skills such as team work, communications, problem solving, creativity, etc, while technology can also help by providing students with new opportunities to communicate, learn with others, and be creative.

There are some articles on this blog that can also help. See below and search the blog for what you are looking for.

Identify the tricks in the Computer Virus

Perhaps there is in your computer virus or malware, but you would not know. Here are some signs that your computer infected with a virus or malware.

Computer running slow. If you have your computer slower than usual, then you may be exposed to computer viruses or malware. Creator of the virus can send you spam email, directing you to a page or page that your browser to fake, and stake out or steal your important files.

Email random. Many viruses can spread to your email. The virus can spread to the entire contact list in the email address. If you receive an email that displays a word such as "Undeliverable", then it was likely the virus is.

Damage to the Internet browser. If you start the browser frozen or dead, your computer may have been infected. Virus happy to use the Internet to disseminate infeksinya. By doing so, the virus will eat out memory or hard disk resource and berimbas to the performance of your browser.

Error messages when booting up. If the startup process for your computer, you then receive an error message, the message is a sign of the other. Malware programs usually also will participate in the startup when you start the computer.

Is Street Racing the death of my Pentax K10Ds!

Is Street Racing the death of my Pentax K10Ds!

For the last 10 months Ive hosted a new blog dedicated to my Pentax K10Ds - cameras that I have really enjoyed using. They are fantastic, solid, dependable cameras that are perfect for travel and general shooting.

But the rubber hit the road recently (almost literally), when I decided to cover the annual motorcycle street racing in my local town.

Speed demons the Pentax K10Ds are most definitely NOT. In fact, they struggle to get past 2fps, and ISO 800 is pretty noisy. Fortunately, I also have a beat up Canon 50D on permanent loan from a friend, and she also let me borrow her 400mm f5.6L lens for the weekend to shoot with. Oh Yeah!

Streetrace action 2014. Canon 50D with 400mm f5.6L @ 1/2000th. ISO 800
The 50D has a much more respectable 5fps, and a fairly solid autofocus system for tracking subjects across the frame (something else that Pentax cameras in general struggle with). It was a pretty miserable, overcast (and then very rainy) day, so I cranked the ISO up to 800 on the 50D, set it on Hi-speed continuous autofocus, and mounted the 400mm f5.6L on a monopod for better stability.

No 167. Canon 50D with 400mm f5.6L @ 1/2500th. ISO 800
I was not disappointed with this setup. In fact, I had an absolute blast and the focus was blazingly fast and accurate 9 times out of ten. And Im pretty sure that the tenth time was probably user error.

There were only two things I struggled with on the day. First, because its street racing and you can dangerously close to the action, I found that the 400mm was a bit too much reach and I found myself walking back further than I would have liked to get everything framed right. I could have easily gone with a 70 to 200mm instead. Lesson learned for next time.

And second, as noted earlier, the 50D Ive borrowed has had a hard life, and although it performed flawlessly, the batteries for it arent what they used to be. I took four of them - fully charged the night prior to the event - but they only lasted me until lunchtime and then all four were depleted! Bummer!!

Go Kart demonstration. Canon 50D with 400mm f5.6L @ 1/2500th. ISO 800
So that meant that, after lunch, I had to pack away the Canon gear, and reach for the Pentax K10D with Sigma 55-200mm zoom lens. The good news with going for the Pentax was that now the battery was going to last, the focal length of the zoom was about right, and the K10D body is weather sealed for what was now fairly consistent driving rain.

Unfortunately, thats where all the good news ends for the Pentax. After using the Canon 50D all morning, mowing to the K10D was painful. The Sigma hunted continuously in the low light, ISO 800 is pretty noisy, and I could only get off one shot before the action was over as the autofocus system and frame rate tried to cope. In a word, frustrating.

Pentax K10D with Sigma 55-200mm at f5.6 @1/640th. ISO 800
I did manage to get one good shot with the Pentax (see above). And thats it. One good image. Out of probably 200 shots I took before giving up and calling it a day. Whereas, with the Canon 50D I took over 1000 images, with probably at least half of them worth keeping. Easily 100 would be worth putting on a cd and giving to the race committee (who kindly gave me an all access media pass for the day). I had an absolute blast with the Canon 50D. I hated using the Pentax for Street Racing.

I do want to reiterate what I said at the beginning of this post; I really enjoy using the Pentax K10D for general photography. They are solid, dependable, well designed and rugged little cameras, that within their limits, take excellent images.

Notice the caveat within their limits in that last sentence? What are their limits? Well, for me, there are only two. By far the major issue I am finding as I go deeper into the system, is lens selection. In the autofocus lineup, its fairly limited - and very expensive to buy brand new. If I then go second hand, I run into another problem; there just arent very many available for sale - at least here in New Zealand on our online auction site Trademe.  At any given time their might be two or three Pentax auto focus lenses worth considering on auction (and then at fairly high prices), whereas if we look at Canon in the second hand department, there might for over two hundred worthy contenders, at better prices! For someone who is constantly on a budget with their photography gear, and who needs best bang for the buck, going with a Pentax systems seems now, in hindsight, a rather unwise decision.

And whats the second limiting factor for Pentax? Well, in case you hadnt already guessed, its the autofocus system. It kinda sucks. And even on the latest K5IIs and K3 its reportedly still behind the likes of Canon and Nikon. Which admittedly, up until now, wasnt a major concern to me. But now it seems like it is. Especially if I plan on doing more street race shooting (and I do).

Finally, there is the noise issue at ISO 800 and above. The files were a little noisier than I would like, and obviously more noisier that the Canon 50D at ISO 800 (itself known as one of Canons noisier bodies). That being said, Im not someone who chases the high ISO settings as a must have for my cameras. I grew up old school shooting film, and ISO 400 still seems like a heck of a lot! In fact, shooting at ISO 800 is as much as I would want to push any camera sensor - so these 25,000 ISO figures are just crazy stupid to me. But a relatively clean ISO 800 would make me a happy photographer.

So what does all this mean? Well, it means that yes, I am going to sell my Pentax K10Ds (somewhat reluctantly) and look at getting something else. What else, you may ask? Well, I think I might know the very thing....

If you havent installed last weeks Java update, now would be a good time.
In the past few days, attack code targeting one of the many remote-code-execution vulnerabilities fixed in Java 7 Update 21 was folded into either the folded into the RedKit or CrimeBoss exploit kit. By Sunday, that attack code was being actively unleashed on unsuspecting end users, according to a short blog post published by a researcher from antivirus provider F-Secure.

IP Subnetting – The easy way

IP Subnetting – The easy way

Is network subnetting driving you crazy ? Does binary math gives you headaches ? well..fear not, since the time i have delved into networks, i have gone through all the oohs and aaahs and the NAH’s of the logical crescendo , and I present you the easiest way to do subnetting. Generally,3 questions are being addressed when subnetting an IP- IP subnetting made easy - prohack

  1. No of subnets
  2. No of valid hosts and
  3. Host range/block size

We will tackle them one by one. First you need to know about IP addresses and their classes.

Class A includes 0-127 where 0 and 127 are reserved, the default subnet mask for this class is /8 .

Class B includes 128-191 in their first octet, and the default subnet mask for this class is /16

Class C deals with 192-224 in their first octet and the default subnet mask for this class is /24

Also, also, understand a simple concept, subnet masks lying between 8- 15 are A class masks, from 16- 23 are B class and 24-32 are C class masks. Furthermore, a subnet mask can be expressed as this where (N)etwork value and (H)ost values-

Class A : 255.0.0.0   = NNNNNNNN.HHHHHHHH.HHHHHHHH.HHHHHHHH
Class B : 255.255.0.0 = NNNNNNNN.NNNNNNNN.HHHHHHHH.HHHHHHHH
Class C : 255.255.0.0 = NNNNNNNN.NNNNNNNN.NNNNNNNN.HHHHHHHH
Class mask value          8        16        24        32

Now once you see it, lets tackle some real life questions. Lets find the no of subnets and valid hosts for 192.168.10.10/18

See this ? its a C class IP address having a mask of B class (as the mask lies between 16-24) now, in order to find the number of subnets, use the following formulae -

2 ^ (What mask you have been provided – default mask of the IP address given)

putting the values here..

2^(18-16) –>  2^(2) –>  4 subnets

simple : )

Now for calculating the no.of hosts, use the below formulae -

2^(32- what mask you have been provided) –2

Putting values here..

2^(32-18)-2 -> 2^(14)-2 –> 16384-2 –> 16382 hosts

piece of cake ..

now to find the block size, see the provided mask lies between which next default mask value , which in this case is 24 (as 18 is greater than 16 and less than 24) . So ..

Subtract the provided mask with the class mask value which is greater than it.

2^(Next class mask value – provided mask)

which on putting values will be

2^(24-18) –> 2^6 –> 64

So, the block size will be of 64 . So, the IP addresses will be divided into 4 subnets (which we already calculated above) above as -

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.63.255

192.168.64.0 – 192.168.127.255

192.168.128.0 - 192.168.191.255

192.168.192.0 – 192.168.255.255

And the best part, its applicable to all classes : )

Happy Subnetting : ]

How to Train Your Dragon The Legend of the Boneknapper

How to Train Your Dragon The Legend of the Boneknapper

Back in April I worked at Ken Duncans studio on the Lengend of the Boneknapper for the How to Train Your Dragon DVD. It was a very intense and fast project, but fun too! Got to work with a lot of old friends, and make some new ones as well. The shorts, at least the 2D parts, were really fast paced and didnt allow for a lot of longer acting shots so most of what youll see here are pretty quick shots (plus its not every single shot I did). Ken and Sandro (our awesome animation supervisor) were really cool to give me what is probably the longest shot in the short (the shot directly below). I have to say too I was very impressed with the clean-up crew on this project! I have worked on films where, for whatever reason, you have no contact with clean-up folk and sometimes the results are less than desireable. On this project they sought the animators out to run stuff by us which I was found amazing, and I truly feel like my work actually ended up on screen. Its the way it should be but hardly ever is anymore.

We are all about to go back to start animating a 21 minute short film (ALL 2D) for the Kung Fu Panda 2 DVD. I am really looking forward to this one!

Implementing the right to housing– a guide for local governments and civil society

Implementing the right to housing– a guide for local governments and civil society

Implementing the right to housing– a guide for local governments and civil society
https://www.scribd.com/doc/314022758/Implementing-the-right-to-housing-a-guide-for-local-governments-and-civil-society
"… The right to housing is not just a rallying cry. It, like human rights more generally, offers concrete standards that can be implemented and measured for progress. The results can be transformative and can shift us away from charity toward social justice.
The right to adequate housing
Housing is the basis of stability and security for an individual or family. The centre of our social, emotional and sometimes economic lives, a home should be a sanctuary; a place to live in peace, security and dignity.
Increasingly viewed as a commodity, housing is most importantly a human right. Under international law, to be adequately housed means having secure tenure – not having to worry about being evicted or having your home or lands taken away. It means living somewhere that is in keeping with your culture, and having access to appropriate services, schools, and employment.
Too often violations of the right to housing occur with impunity. In part, this is because at the domestic level housing is rarely treated as a human right. The key to ensuring adequate housing is the implementation of this human right through appropriate government policy and programmes, including national housing strategies…."

How to widen the column blog

How to widen the column blog

blogspotHow to widen the column blog template, but for the templates, comes from bloggers, not from templates that have been modified
Before we go into the problem is useful to know the first parts of the blogger templates, then a template will have three important elements, namely:
• Element Header
• Outer Element
• Elements Footer
For Outer element on the return to:
• main element, the element of this play is the element which we keep posting, so if we post an article and it will go on display this element

• Sidebar element, the element of this sidebar is an element to store a variety of blog tools or accessories that we want to enhance your blog.

Outer-Wrapper is a container for storing main-wrapper and sidebar-wrapper. So if we want to add a new column or in other words the new sidebar, then the first thing to do is mandatory in a wide value-added of the Outer-wrapper itself

So now how do I expand the existing columns on our templates, but again remember this is only for pristine tempalates inherited from bloggers or minima templates,

Follow these steps but with the notes do not check the Expand Widget Templates, as it would appear the codes I do not understand

So the first step for the code like below
#header-wrapper {
width:660px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:1px solid $bordercolor;
}
Change 660px to 760px, so be like below
#header-wrapper {
width:760px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:1px solid $bordercolor;
}
looking for code like this below
#footer {
width:660px;
clear:both;
margin:0 auto;
padding-top:15px;
line-height: 1.6em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.1em;
text-align: center;
}
Change 660px to 760px and script be like below
#footer {
width:760px;
clear:both;
margin:0 auto;
padding-top:15px;
line-height: 1.6em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.1em;
text-align: center;
}
well for his term container weve widened from 660px to 760px then the columns we can add the sidebar width to 100px and add the width sidebarnya we are now looking at the code below
# sidebar-wrapper }
width: 220px;
float: right;
word-wrap: break-word; / * fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE * /
overflow: hidden; / * fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float * /
}
change 220px to 320px (or as wide as we added jumalah earlier) if we want to add more depending on how wide px when we added the # header-wrapper (and footernya earlier,

if you want to play or enlarged main column that usually contains about our posts, then we search tingagl below code
# main-wrapper }
width: 410px;
float: left;
word-wrap: break-word; / * fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE * /
overflow: hidden; / * fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float * /
}
But remember, if we add the width of the two we also need to increase the number of px that we add in the # header-wrapper, and footer-wrapernya earlier
ok good luck, but remember do not try on our main blog first, try the experiment first blog.

I buy them by the dozen!

I buy them by the dozen!

My new Sunday studio at Crossroads often leads to questions I dont much think about anymore. Last week it was about my ROYAL brushes. I buy them wholesale by the dozen. My particular choice is the SG4500 series, soft grip long handle snow-white filberts and brights. Cost per dozen around $2.25 each (any size).

They have nice balance with a comfortable rubber grip. I settled down on the SG4500 series, but they have a wide product range to choose from. Best of all they wont break the bank. So after years of using Royals I personally know the quality is consistent and they can take beating.

Now, I do wash them with soap and water after every use and occasionally give one a hair cut - especially if its a favorite. My Royals dont seem to mind a daily bath either.

Even at throw away prices brushed should be taken care of.
