Jejak Seribu Penyu Part 1

Jejak Seribu Penyu Part 1

Bintan, Akhir Februari 2009
“Kau... kenapa mengikutiku?”
“Aku tidak mengikutimu. Aku hanya ingin ... bicara denganmu.”
“Bukankah saat ini kita tengah bicara?”
“Bukan, bukan hanya sekadar bicara, tapi ada yang hendak kutunjukkan padamu.”
“Apa? Apa yang mau kau tunjukkan?”

“Tidak sekarang. Tapi nanti... di tempatku... pada saat yang tepat.”

Semerbak melati menguar lembut. Menjelajah ruang temaram.

Dimensi Lyvia
Perairan Tambelan, 2 Hari Kemudian
“Hei, bangun!

Sedikit pun tak mengubah riak tenangnya saat mengeluarkan isi make up pouch-nya: bedak, lipstik, pensil alis, maskara....

“Cukup!”

Kamu?”

Jeff Seiler Dave Sim Me Part 1

Jeff Seiler Dave Sim Me Part 1

JEFF SEILER:
I’m going to continue with the format of including my letters to Dave along with his responses, since he chose to communicate by fax, exclusively, in this time period and by writing his responses in the margins of the photocopies of my letters. It was a confusing way to correspond and this “experiment” did not last for long. This series of exchanges shows just how not-on-the-same-page Dave and I can sometimes be. These exchanges by fax took place between May 19th and June 5th, 2008:

5/19/08

Hi, Dave! Happy Birthday! 52 years: there, I got it right this time. Heh.

As I mentioned to you a week or so ago, Jeff T. gave me instructions for sending and receiving faxes via e-mail. This will make it much easier and won’t “impose” on K. [Ed: K. was my girlfriend at the time. She would send and receive the faxes for me at her office.]

You’re my first test subject, so I hope this goes through. You should know that the free fax sending is limited to twice-a-day, three pages each, and will always have an ad on the cover page.

By the way, your note to K. at the top of the last fax was well-received. I joked to her that she may very well be the only female in a very long time to whom you have written “feel free to tell me to knock it off.” Got a good laugh.

Be well and, again, happy birthday. [Ed: Well, I got his age right, but not the date. Meh.]

Jeff

==================

Jeff--

Came through just fine… Just finishing up my page-a-day for glamourpuss No. 3. Say hi to K.

Dave

==================

20 May 08

Hi Jeff -

Jeff T. was supposed to be setting up the eBay auction for the ad space on the back cover of glamourpuss No. 2 (as described on the back cover of glamourpuss No. 1).

This is kind of short notice so if you have to extend the auction from the[sic] May 24 to May 31 to fit your own schedule, feel free. I’ll need the ad by the third week of June at the latest, but anytime before that is fine.

Thanks,

Dave

==================

[Ed: Well, talk about your non sequiturs…]

5/20/08

Hi, Dave---I received your fax from earlier in the day and, man, am I confused.

Are you asking me to make an ad for glamourpuss #2? Are you asking me to set up the ebay auction that Jeff T. was supposed to be setting up? Or something completely different?

Nothing you wrote rang a bell with me. Sorry.

I’ll look for your answer soon.

Jeff Seiler

==================

Jeff--

The ad space on the back cover of glamourpuss No. 2 is for sale to the highest bidder. Hopefully, an advertiser will bit $500 or more to put their ad on the back of No. 2. I was announced on the back cover of No. 1 -- eBay auction starting May 24 and ending May 31...starting bid $500.

Dave

==================

Hi, Dave--This information is interesting, but I’m still confused as to why you faxed it to me. Your statement, “I’ll need the ad by the third week of June at the latest, but any time before that is fine” seems like some sort of imperative directed at me.

Are you asking me to pass on all of this information to Jeff T.?

????????????????????????

Jeff

==================

Jeff

1. I need someone to post an auction on eBay.
2. What I am auctioning is the back cover ad space on glamourpuss No. 2, starting bid $500.
3. Whoever wins the auction, I will need their ad by the third week of June.
4. Jeff T. was originally going to do this. Now I need someone instead of Jeff T. to do it.
5. I can ask someone else if you would rather [not do it].
Dave

==================

5/21/08

Hi, Dave--Okay, sorry to be so obtuse. Sometimes, I’m just in a concrete frame of mind. What I will do is go to eBay here in a few minutes and see if I, being just a microscopic bit more advanced than you when it comes to computer skills, can figure how to put the auction up. [Ed: Yes, Jeff, the great proofreader, does occasionally split infinitives.] If I can, I will. If I can’t, I will let you know and you can see if Lenny will do it. Or, Sandeep. Whatever.

[Dave’s inserted response: Not a problem. I’ll get Matthew or Sandeep to do it.]

Margaret is working on a letter to you that may or may not affect whether you want her to repost the petition. She has, in the meantime, let me know that I can put it up if I go to a certain site and can decipher the “WYSIWYG” instructions. She doesn’t mind if Rick or I do it, so I said that I would run it by you. Do you want me to try, in her stead, even with things between us two pending?

[Dave’s inserted response: I think the petition is fine right now, but I would like the new names posted. Rick S. said Margaret has to do that, for some reason.]

Rick S. and I both posted the [Chester] Brown/Sim faxes two days ago--he at his blog and I at the Yahoo group, under Files. I am strongly leaning to posting your faxes, with quotes and obvious references to Jeff T. deleted, since Jeff T. has said very clearly that he doesn’t want his faxes posted. I do think, though, that such deletions might be extensive and, thus, render your faxes confusing. I’ll reread them and check. More on that later.

[Dave’s inserted response: I think if you just post the arguments, that would be fine. Jeff T. has no say over my words and his arguments can be paraphrased or alluded to. {Ed: IIRC, I ultimately chose not to post the arguments between Dave and Jeff T., out of my immense respect for both of them.}

David C. has been reassigned [Ed: By the military] and no longer has the “block” on communications with you or the Yahoos. He and I have spoken and I am going to fax you his email [that he sent to me], as I think you might want to see it. I’m pretty sure he has signed the petition. Regardless, he told me to tell you he wishes you well.

[Dave’s inserted response: Is he willing to identify the commanding female officer publicly? {...pause…}]

[Ed: Here, Dave refers to the fact that David C.’s commanding female officer somehow found out about David C. being a fan and supporter of Cerebus and Dave Sim. She, essentially, told David C. to cease and desist all communication with Dave Sim or any of his supporters.]

[Continuing Dave’s inserted response: We can’t just keep ignoring these strategic blunders on the feminists’ part, as if they never happened.]

Jeff T., just so you know, isn’t pouting or saying anything bad about you. He’s currently in studio, recording 30 (!) new songs [Ed: With his band, Jazz Bastards.] Very busy.

[Dave’s inserted response: So. That’s very funny.]

I have not heard that Judenhass came out today, so I guess next week. I talked to one history teacher at a middle school who wants to order a classroom set of 25, or so. Chris at SuperGeeks will give him a 20% discount: I checked. I think you’re going to see word of mouth really bloom. I’ve been talking it up everywhere, including to a principal just today.

Okay, that’s your update for now. Take care.

Jeff

[Dave’s inserted response: I don’t think you understand exactly how extensive the shunning is, although I’ll be happy to be proven wrong (as always). In the meantime, I’ll just continue administering my therapy to those in need of it--which turns out to be pretty much everyone.]

How To Start Your Own Blog And Make Money Doing It Part 2 Tools And Resources

How To Start Your Own Blog And Make Money Doing It Part 2 Tools And Resources

READ ALL THE POSTS IN THIS SERIES:
Part 1: How To Start A Blog  |  Part 2: My Favorite Tools & Resources  |  Part 3: How To Monetize Your Blog

I wish I had had a friend or big sister who blogged who could show me the ropes... but instead, I had to figure it all out on my own. One of the things I had to do was research, and stalk other blogs to find out what sort of programs, equipment, and resources they used for blogging. It was really hard since I didnt have any terms or basic web knowledge to go off of. Thank goodness for Google!

This post is devoted to showing you all the basic tools I use on a daily basis. You may not need them all, depending on your specific blogging topic, but most of these are things I couldnt live without.

This series will be divided into three sections: Setting Up Your Blog, My Favorite Tools And Resources, and How To Monetize A Blog.

Okay, so this one goes without saying. You need a laptop and or a desktop, as well as some big old external hard drives. I use an Asus Desktop (I switched over to this one HERE recently) with over 3 terabytes of space on the hard drive. And I have a gorgeous 24" screen (HERE) which I LOVE for all my graphic design needs. I do love Apple products, so I may switch over at some point, but for now, Im a windows girl.

I also have several external hard drives. These are a must as you really should back up your files on at least two sources. I have mine on three different devices, and some of my most valuable and important files on dropbox as well. The reason I am a "crazy backup person" is because I recently had a nightmare situation where I took everything off my desktop so I could take it in for some work, and I put everything on my external... which died a few days after. My wedding photos, June and Jasons baby photos (and whole childhood up to that point), all my high resolution blog photos, and Etsy business was gone. I was devastated, so I had to send it in for recovery (drivesavers) and it cost me 2K to get everything back. Lesson learned: Never again!!!!

Lets talk Photography. This is what makes, or breaks your blog. Its the backbone of your content. Now Im not a photography expert, but I LOVE my camera. Seriously, ditch the iPhone & get yourself the real thing.

My Camera is a Canon t3i. It has since been replaced by a newer model like this one: Canon t5i I really need to get a clicker remote too, but this camera does have a timer, and can do both video and photos.

The started lens it comes with is the 18-55 lens. Its great for generic, every day use.  You can see it in the top photo, and to its left is an unedited photo I took with it in natural light.

My favorite lens is actually a fixed lens (it cant zoom, but boy does this baby focus!) its the 50 mm
f/1.8 II lens. You can see it in the bottom right photo, with the photo to the bottom left showing the same photo as the 18-55, but taken with this lens. Every time I use this lens, my photos turn out better focused, with more vibrant color, and it really creates a dreamy soft light. The downfall to it is that you have to stand really far back to get a normal photo, because it doesnt zoom in or out. Its a fixed lens.

One photography tip: Shoot in natural light, and turn up the exposure on your camera (for good lighting)

Also, I recommend getting a lens protector to keep dust & scratches off your lenses. I use one like THIS.

Also, everyone needs a tripod. It really makes a world of difference to be able to take photos with a steady hand. I got mine at Best Buy.

PHOTOSHOP.

Seriously. Get it. Its only $10 a month, which is the price of  a couple cups coffee a month. You dont have to have a degree to use it, and the ability to edit your photos, design your site, and use layers and actions (filters)  is priceless. My blog, you-tube and google- we will all help you learn. But it seriously is leaps and bounds better than everything else out there.

PicMonkey

While I dont use it for my photo editing, I do use picmonkey for their awesome free collage tool. Its so much easier than manually doing it in photoshop.

Wacom Intuos

So this is a tablet that you can draw directly into the computer with. Its basically a mouse pad with a pen that you connect via USB to your desktop or laptop. I have a wireless kit for it too. I started using this baby in 2012ish, and I could never go back. Its a great, inexpensive way to be able to draw, and use your own hand writing directly into the computer, and makes photoshop a breeze.

The downfall of this is you have to draw on the pad while looking up at the screen. I got really good at it, but there is really no substitution for drawing directly on a screen, which brings me to my recent upgrade (below)

Wacom Cintiq 13HD

So I am in Love. The End.

This is the designers dream machine. I use it every day.

What is it? Its like a large tablet that acts as a computer monitor. You can draw directly on it... its kinda like using an iPad, but better. Its much more expensive than the Wacom Intuos, but if you are at all into digital design & photoshop, this machine will not disappoint. I cant sing its praises loud enough.

The only downside to the 13HD that I have is that you have to use it with a 3 in one power, hdmi, and usb cord, which Ive already had to replace twice (it was toggling in and out...) They actually have one that doesnt need to be plugged in and is a touch screen too. I should have gotten that one, but its a lot more expensive, and I exclusively use this on my desk anyways. But all in all, an amazing "I can never go back" tool.

I use Inlinkzs Project Manager tool to organize all my posts by subjects in my menu. Some people are able to do thumbnails by using html... but I am all about user friendly, so this is what I use to organize my posts and menus.

I use Bitly  to create short, tracking links so I can tell how many people click on my links on places like facebook, links to my printables in my dropbox folders, sidebars, etc. Its super easy to use.

This is exactly what it sounds like. Google Analytics gives you lots of insight on your viewers, where they click on your site, how long the spend, etc. Its good stuff.

Anyone who has spent 5 minutes on my blog knows how much I use Drop Box. Its awesome for file sharing. I use it for freebie printables, graphics, and patterns.

The short and simple: I use Paypal for invoicing & having clients pay me for custom work. They do take a small processing percentage, but I can live with that. A girls got to get paid, right?

So those are my top used tools and resources (all of which I basically use on a daily basis!)

Stay tuned for Part 3: How To Monetize Your Blog

This post includes affiliate links. All opinions are my own, but I only promote things that I love and think you will love too! :)

Java Installs Adware With Plugin Part Of Growing Mac Adware Attacks

Java Installs Adware With Plugin Part Of Growing Mac Adware Attacks

--

Sadly, like a lot of customer adverse companies, Oracle is now packing adware with its Java plugin installer. Beware!

My colleague Thomas Reed caught up with the situation and has done some testing to see whats going on. I recommend reading his The Safe Mac article found here:

Java now installing adware
Despite the fragility of the adware install process, this is still going to be a problem for many people installing Java. Oracle should be ashamed of themselves! Since Java has repeatedly posed security problems in the past, and Oracle has now shown a willingness to infect their own users with adware, I strongly recommend avoiding Java if at all possible. For those who must have Java, Trouton has posted information in his Der Flounder article on how to run the Java installer only, found inside the adware-riddled Java 8 Update 40 application, which should install Java without the toolbar.
For those affected by this Ask Toolbar, I have added detection of the Ask browser extensions and support files to my AdwareMedic app and my Adware Removal Guide. And thanks to Rich Trouton for bringing attention to this issue!
Rich Troutons article on the Java adware problem can be found here:

Oracle’s Java 8 Update 40 – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
You will be prompted to set Ask.com as your browser homepage, with the choice to do so checked off by default. If left checked, Safari’s homepage will be set with a search.ask.com URL and a Safari extension will be used to install an Ask.com toolbar.

Thomas Reed found that the Java installer will install a corresponding plugin depending upon which web browser you have set as your default. With regards to Safari, he found that it also had to be running at the time for the adware installer to work, if it worked at all.

Needless to say, DONT fall for the adware installation! You dont want that crap on your Mac. If you do get skewered, grab a copy of Thomas free/donationware Adware Medic and get rid of it.

ATTACK OF THE ADWARE!

The Windows community has been getting hammered with adware for many years. Now the adware rats have caught up with the Mac community and are infesting the stuff into everything possible. I wrote an article last year, over at MacSmarticles, about the ruination of VersionTracker after CNET/CBS made it just as bad as the rest of their Downloads.CNET.com website. It is now nearly impossible to download anything from the CNET site without having adware foisted at you by its installers. The same thing is going on at just about every other downloads website. I gladly point out that MacUpdate.com is an exception as well as MajorGeeks.com. These are the only two download websites I trust at this point in time.

Recently, the computer manufacturer Lenovo has been slammed by the computer community for infesting their computers with crapware that included a diabolical adware program called Superfish. The adware was built on a code foundation provided by the company Komodia. Their awful software features:

- Faked security certificates used to allow the software to spy on your SSL/TLS, HTTPS connections over the Internet.
- A private encryption key that is protected by the password "komodia". That password doesnt just work in Superfish, but in ALL Komodia software that makes use of spying on HTTPS web streams. The number of affected applications is expected to be near 100.

It has also been discovered that other programs pull the same security trickery:

EFF unearths evidence of possible Superfish-style attacks in the wild
Crypto-busting apps may have been exploited against visitors of Google and dozens more.
by Dan Goodin

One such program is PrivDog, provided by Internet security certificate provider Comodo Group, who have already suffered scandal by releasing nine fraudulent certificates faking themselves to be the likes of Google, Yahoo, Skype and Windows Live. This gives Comodo two black eyes.

Then add to this situation the fact that at least two anti-malware applications have been found to perform the same faked security certificate trick as a method for catching malware being downloaded to your computer. They are provided as deep inspection features of their software, which I obviously suggest you TURN OFF. Those two anti-malware programs are Malwarebytes and Avast. I found out about Malwarebytes via word-of-mouth and am waiting for solid verification.

No doubt, other such questionable software, crapware and adware will be uncovered in the coming months and some of it will run on Macs.

How to see what is in multi part MIME messages your email prog cannot decode munpack

How to see what is in multi part MIME messages your email prog cannot decode munpack

Pauline has "Got a nokia e63, takes jpegs. I send it via hotmail using 3 as the server" and I could see some of the pictures she sent in Thunderbird, but not others. Same for my Mum using Windows+some version of Outlook.

How to see what is in multi-part MIME messages your email prog cannot decode:

1. From Thunderbird/Evolution/gmail/wherever: Save message (as .eml).
2. $ sudo apt-get install mpack # or equivalent for your OS - install package called "mpack"
3. $ munpack message.eml

# bash, multiple files:
$ for f in *.eml; do munpack $f; done

 How to not see it: open it in Thunderbird/Evolution/Outlook
Upgrade Thunderbird to 3.x (ESET antivirus immediatelyu goes crazy scanning Thunderbird indexing Inbox urgh!). Forward to gmail. Try to open .eml with mutt. Thunderbird attachment for viewing emails. Not sure if it would manage to unpack these messages.
http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html
Mutt looking very lovely these days on ubuntu, be careful it will write changes to mail file that it opens!
$ mutt -f ~/.thunderbird/meh.default/ImapMail/meh/INBOX

Where I say "I see same problem." Im quite wrong :( whoops.
Reverse reverse! Nuns! Pass the retractor please nurse.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87653#c28
I see same problem.
With latest Thunderbird 3.0 (and previous 2.x versions) MIME boundary
containing commas (and other non-alpha chars) doesnt get decoded. MIME message
just shown inline as text not decoded.

Coming from someone using a nokia E65 phone.

2 messages okay:
boundary="EPOC32-z1G82Qp+YQsMY44N0z3DsrBDJ5L2s9mKj+Ykc140ms_jxhkn"
boundary="EPOC32-Lx73B+hVbJ5wSRpXTlLKyjwD8YWVf1hg8bHk+Tssd4tJHbT"

5 messages not okay (note the one without the comma in boundary .. a - at end
of boundary is a problem?):
boundary="EPOC32-GQ-K-kR,QDS7Gvzz5VbDXdBbM47773Sc_wWCYc,nmD9fKgf"
boundary="EPOC32-NnWHRR1Qc18lTP8sP4YxqmvW0zz+RSFktwVyL,NZ3bG2k0L6"
boundary="EPOC32-0VSK1,9DqPMqGctWX_PyNxx,2+FmXKn5b1DM9_K7yclDZlst"
boundary="EPOC32-yMNqRYYmVjRmXlDTj7rtscB8H9mtYrjHfxb0JFc7VyYK47-"
boundary="EPOC32-WnvGdp2s03kDPHxjvTW,khRc1,4_C-q1BWv_lMZdg6_-CwBs"

The headers seem to have some corruption.
X-OriginalArrivalTime: and Date: header get inserted in To: line which maybe had some end of line chars in a row in it.

This is probably the REAL problem. "probably is when there is a small chance the thing wont happen" - Kate @ dinner this tea-time.

The problem I see seems to be because the email headers have a blank line inside the To: header line. Email readers Thunderbird/Evolution/Outlook/mutt display the message body starting after the blank line in To: line and MIME message type is not detected. nokia + hotmail
munpack extracts attachments okay.
